The eMIS team participated in the 5th Global Symposium on Health System Research (HSR 2018) held at Liverpool, England from 8 to 12 October 2018. Satellite Sessions were held on 8 and 9 October. Main Sessions took place from 10 to 12 October, 2018. The eMIS organized a satellite session on 9 October 2018 with the title: Using eHealth/mHealth Solutions by Community Health Workers in Bangladesh to address the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Shams El Arifeen, Senior Director, Maternal and Child Health Division, International Center for Diarrheal Diseases and Research (icddr,b) chaired and moderated the session.
At the beginning, Ariella Camera, Deputy Director, OPHNE, USAID, Dhaka made introductory remarks on the collaboration between the USAID and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Bangladesh that has been contributing to health system improvement.
Presentations
After her remarks, a video documentary depicting CHWs at work using digital tools developed under eMIS was exhibited. The video showed how the CHWs were using mobile digital solutions and how the supervisors’ and managers’ roles were integrated into the eMIS ecosystem. The eMIS apps are helping the CHWs to better communicate with clients and improve service delivery.
Afterwards, Md. Humayun Kabir, Senior Strategic and Technical Advisor, MEASURE Evaluation delivered the first presentation where the context of eMIS was explained. The eMIS ecosystem is adding digital landscape in the health system. He described how digital tools have been used to automate the business processes beginning with population registration and later by using those for health services delivery. The title of the presentation was Linking population data with health Services Data to Ensure Continuum of Care and Improve Data Quality.
The title of the 2nd presentation was Improved Worker’s Performance through Embedded Medical Intelligence in Digitalized MIS of Primary Care Facilities in Bangladesh, which was delivered by Dr. Shumona Shafinaz, Senior Technical Advisor, USAID’s MaMoni HSS.
Third and fourth Presentations were delivered by Mr. Suman Kanti Chowdhury, Senior Research Investigator, icddr,b who highlighted with screenshots the capability of the system on the Use of innovative mHealth supervision tools to enhance monitoring of community health workers. He furtherpresented the findings of a rapid assessment of eMIS which were rated as highly effective in terms of functionality and usability by the users.
The last Presentation was delivered by Mohammad Golam Kibria. The title was Making Electronic and Logistics Management Information Systems Interoperable: The Potential to Create a Stronger Health System in Bangladesh.
After the presentations were over, the floor was open for discussion and the participants interacted with the presenters on different aspects of the eMIS tools and their usage. Over 60 participants attended the seminar.
eMIS Booth at the Marketplace
eMIS also participated in the market place at the hsr2018. Three brochures on community system, supervisions system and facility systems on the occasion were distributed in the marketplace. A technical brief was also published.
Posters
Three hsr2018 accepted three posters prepared from eMIS team members. Those were displayed in the designated areas, which were:
- Supervising Community Health Workers through mobile application in Bangladesh by Md. Humayun Kabir.
- Stakeholder Management and Buy-in for Implementation of eMIS Initiatives in Bangladesh by Reza Ali Rumi.
- Building Interoperability between Community Health Service Statistics and Logistics Management Information System in Bangladesh Improves Data Quality, Visibility, and Effective Use by Mohammad Golam Kibria.
